Why choose a personal loan?

Cards, overdrafts and buy now pay later are built to keep you paying. A personal loan is built to end: the rate is locked, the repayment never moves, and you can circle the date it is done.

  • ✓One fixed repayment that fits your fortnight
  • ✓A rate locked for the whole term
  • ✓No surprises: the whole cost shown before you sign
  • ✓Paying it down can help your credit file, not haunt it2

Questions? We've got answers

What is a personal loan?

A personal loan is a fixed amount you borrow and repay in equal instalments over a set term, usually one to seven years. The rate is fixed, the repayment is fixed, and there is a date it ends.

That structure is the point: unlike a credit card or an overdraft, a personal loan is built to finish.

How much can I borrow?

It depends on your income, your outgoings and your credit file, because every lender on the panel is required to make sure a loan is affordable for you. Your adviser will give you an honest read on the realistic range before anything goes near a lender.

Will checking my rate affect my credit score?

No. Checking your rate with BorrowClub does not affect your credit score.2 It is recorded as a quote enquiry on your credit file, not a hard application. A hard enquiry only happens if you choose an offer and ask the lender to proceed.

Can I get a personal loan with bad credit?

Sometimes, and honestly, sometimes not. Panel lenders price a wider range of credit histories than a bank, but a harder file usually means a higher rate, and your adviser will show you exactly what that costs in dollars before you decide.

If the numbers do not work in your favour, we will say so. A smaller amount, a co-borrower, or three months of clean repayments first can all change the answer.

What fees will I pay?

BorrowClub never charges you a fee. Lenders typically charge an establishment fee, and it is shown in dollars on your offer card along with the rate, the repayment and the total payable. See our rates and fees page for worked examples.
