PPSR check

A search of the Personal Property Securities Register showing whether money is still owed against a car or other property.

The Personal Property Securities Register is the NZ government register where lenders record security interests over personal property, vehicles included. When a car is financed, the lender typically registers its interest against the car itself, and that interest follows the car through a sale.

A PPSR check searches the register for a specific vehicle, by VIN or plate, and reports any live security interests. It costs a few dollars and takes minutes, and it answers the one question a private buyer cannot afford to skip: does someone else’s lender have a claim on this car?

Buy a car with a live security on it and the lender can, in the worst case, repossess it from you even though you paid in full. A live security is not automatically a dead deal; it usually means the seller’s loan gets repaid and discharged as part of settlement, before your money moves.

The full walkthrough, including what to do with a dirty result, is in our guide to what a PPSR check is.
