Private Sale Car Finance NZ
Buy from a person, not a yard.
Private sales are where the sharp prices live. Finance works there too: the lender pays the seller directly, and the checks protect you from buying someone else's debt.
How private sale finance protects you
The risks in a private sale are known and checkable: money owing on the car, a seller who is not the owner, a price above the car. Every one has a check.
- ✓The lender pays the seller directly, so no cash changes hands
- ✓A PPSR check before any money moves, every time
- ✓Ownership and identity verified as part of settlement
- ✓The whole cost shown before you commit1

How a private sale purchase works
Apply with the car's details
The rego and the agreed price, plus your details. Found the car first or the finance first, either order works.
The checks run
PPSR for money owing, ownership confirmed, and your offer comes back with the whole cost shown.
The lender pays the seller
Settlement goes lender to seller. You collect the car, they collect cleared funds, everyone can prove it.
Questions? We've got answers
What is a PPSR check and why does it matter here?
The Personal Property Securities Register records money still owed against the car. Buy a car with a security on it and the lender behind that debt can repossess it from you, even though you paid. The check costs a couple of dollars and it is non-negotiable on every private sale we are involved in.
Should I get the car inspected?
Yes. A pre-purchase inspection costs real money and has saved more buyers than any clause ever written. Finance protects you from the debt risks; the inspection protects you from the mechanical ones. Do both.
Will checking my rate affect my credit score?
No. Checking your rate with BorrowClub does not affect your credit score.2 A hard enquiry only happens if you choose an offer and ask the lender to proceed.
